Herb Garden

I finally got my herb garden going! Two years ago I planted Nasturtiums, Dill, Chamomile, Cat Nip, Kale, and Lettuce from seed. The Nasturtiums and Dill have finally come up! One kale plant came up last year and came back again this year, not in a big way at all. I have nibbled less than a handful of leaves from it. I did plant more kale and lettuce this year, they are doing alright. No harvest yet, but nibbling has its joy.

This year I also bought some plants because I was tired of the barren dirt plot. Lemon Balm, Sage, Variegated Berggarten Sage, Italian Flat Leaf Parsley, Purple Basil, Italian Large Leaf Basil, Creeping Thyme, and more Nasturtiums (They’re the same size as the ones that have been growing for two years from seed). Both of the thyme plants are tiny, but I’m hoping they’ll grow and spread. Cat Mint, Oregano, Tarragon, Yarrow, and Chamomile were transplanted from cousins’ gardens. I still have space for two more plants. I want to put in more perennials that grow easily and are edible, but flowering (especially edible flowers!) plants are nice, too. There are lavender, poppy, and strawberry plants in a different garden in the front yard. More lavender wouldn’t be terrible. Planning to grow cilantro and basil from seed indoors next winter so they’ll be ready to go in the ground in the spring.

We’ll see how it all goes. We’ve reached that period of summer where the forecast is Sunshine and 90+ degrees. The mornings and evenings are lovely and cool.

Acorn squash, zucchini, tomatoes, and onions going strong in the vegetable garden. Most of the seeds I planted in the vegetable garden didn’t come up. It’s disappointing, but it happens. I just keep planting. The compost pile is growing strong, most of my garbage is food waste.

The hole is where the Italian Parsley was planted first, but it got too much sun there. Maybe some Lavendar there? We’ll see.

You can see there’s still some space!

I’m looking forward to planting a few more plants, nurturing them, learning about them, and watching them grow!
