Oneness

I love HH the 14th Dalai Lama’s message here. He talks about the need for compassion and a sense of concern for people, the need to create basic human value and the need for a sense of oneness. Near the end of the video he is asked what changes he hopes to see in the world as a result of this coronavirus crisis, he responds, “I don’t know, too early to say. After one year, two year, maybe people hopefully make oneness of human being…” There’s only one of us here. It reminds me of the misattributed quote from Chief Seattle, “Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.”

It seems like when we view all life as interdependent and view humanity as one human community, there is hope for our future on this planet. He mentions the importance of paying more attention to ecology and listening to doctors, scientists, and experts, not politicians. Ultimately we are all in this together, and we need to eliminate the outdated feudal view and systemic racial injustice. It is the people who have the power, he says.

Let’s do this. Having compassion and a sense of concern for others is not a radical idea. Living in a peaceful world as one is possible.
