Ritual Relish @ Art on Main

So over the moon and beyond to be part of Art on Main, a 6500 sq. ft art gallery and artist studio space that opened in January just before I moved back here. The first time I visited I was struck by how light it felt. It was exactly the kind of place I wanted to teach a yoga class. Mellow Movement began at the beginning of June (and continues weekly at 11am on Saturdays). It has been so lovely to be in that space practicing my craft and connecting.

I was also afforded the opportunity to create a display for my malas. Andrea and I went over to Orr Reid. I wasn’t quite sure what I was looking for until I found a couple of narrow window panels with mullions. Andrea found the hairpin legs. The next morning I started sanding outside in 90+degree humid heat that makes me miss Utah. Got attacked by mosquitos. Realized the project was way beyond what I could take on myself and needed to be outsourced.

Incidentally, a dear friend’s wife passed away the week before. I phoned him up to see if he would be interested in taking a look after taking his mother-in-law to the airport. He would be alone for the first time, maybe ever, after being surrounded by friends and family the previous three weeks. Working with his hands, I thought, would get him in his body and give him the opportunity for a meditative experience as he grieves. He agreed to help me with the project. It was a gnarly project, I am deeply grateful for his help. He did most of the hard labor.

So many applications of the goop

Super gnarly beige side with dirt and weather stripping. A hot mess.

Once it was done it got installed in the gallery in time for Open Studios last Friday night. I am really happy with how it turned out.

In its spot

Spent most of Friday curating and styling it for the party. There’s always a little bit of problem solving and pressure that for some reason I enjoy. I have to remind myself to breathe, too.

Such a fun evening and a great turnout. Grateful for friends and family who came out. A lovely bonus surprise was seeing Gary and Renee. I worked for Gary styling JCP jewels before I moved to NYC. I actually learned quite a bit from him and think of him (and Doug) when I style and snap pics of the malas with my iPhone.

In the morning, we had a nice mellow yoga class with Cooper adding some extra serenity to the situation. Grateful to be part of Art on Main. <3
